Food is everything. If we cannot control our food, we control nothing. Food is influenced just as our bodies are. In our ever-changing world, our food changes. What we first thought of our food nutrients has changed over the years, unknowingly. Our commercialized and mass-distributed food becomes more and more toxic each year. Replacing old food habits with new, nutrient-dense, toxin-free (or low) foods is important for fixing your foundation to heal.
Shop at healthy food stores such as Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, Natural Grocers’, Nature’s Own, AJ’s Fine Foods, Earth Origins Market, and others of the same sort. Walmart and Aldi both have a small selection of organic produce as well as a few other organic finds. Imperfect Foods/Misfit’s Market is a wonderful grocery delivery service that offers organic groceries at good prices.
Focus Foods:
Everything organic!
Organic fruits and vegetables
Following the Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen guidelines can help with decisions when you are in a pinch. You can find these lists at the bottom of this page.
Dairy products should be good quality, organic or raw. If you are going to purchase cheese in any form, ensure it is organic, raw, or if a hard cheese, ensure it is from another country. In the event you find yourself needing to use cream cheese, ricotta cheese, cottage cheese, etc., look for organic! Raw milk and raw cheese are superior. Someone who is “lactose intolerant” can consume raw milk and raw cheese without issues because the lactase enzyme has not been destroyed by pasteurization/homogenization. Yogurt should be organic, Greek, and unsweetened or raw. Harmless Harvest makes a delicious organic coconut yogurt as a great dairy alternative or the Forager brand of organic cashew yogurt. Balance dairy intake just as you would sugar or any other food. I cannot say it enough so I will say it again, dairy MUST be raw or organic to consume.
Oils/Condiments/Dressings- organic butter, organic ghee, grass-fed beef tallow, organic extra virgin, cold-pressed olive oil, organic, unrefined coconut oil, organic avocado oil.
Ghee is non-dairy since it has the animal fats removed therefore okay for those with a dairy sensitivity.
For dressings, use olive oil with vinegar or lemon juice, Caesar or a vinaigrette. Flaxseed oil and balsamic vinegar make a good dressing as well. You can also add any spices you would like to your dressing. A good dressing ratio rule is 3:1, oil: vinegar (or lemon juice). You can mix and match and find your favorites! Hemp oil is great as well!
Look for organic condiments that have zero white cane sugar in them or create your own at home!

Sugars/Sweeteners: 100% real maple syrup, honey, Medjool dates, Okinawa (purple sweet potato), date sugar, coconut sugar, monk fruit sugar, stevia, unsulfured blackstrap molasses, fruit, unsweetened fruit juice, all-fruit jams with no added cane sugar and of course, all of it organic. Although the above listed sweeteners are okay to consume, please do so in moderation, just the same.
Grains/Breads/Pastas (Gluten and Gluten-free)- ORGANIC! If you are ever unsure, revert back to #1 rule of Focus Foods, ORGANIC! If gluten food items such as bread, grains, and pasta are not organic, you are consuming toxic glyphosate. Grains are best avoided if weight loss is a goal. Grains, breads, and pastas can be limited or omitted from your diet, if you'd rather.
Quinoa, rice, amaranth, millet, buckwheat, and teff are all naturally gluten-free grains.
An organic sourdough is my top recommended for bread. Look for a local organic sourdough maker on swap shop or at your local farmer's market. If you are lucky, you will find one that makes all kinds of sourdough baked goods! (Just ensure they don't use any of the toxins from the Remove section.)
Organic pastas made with brown rice, cassava, or black beans are good replacements for your typical enriched floured white pasta. Jovial is an organic gluten-free pasta brand I recommend. Zucchini can also be cut into a noodle shape or used as "zoodles". Spaghetti squash is another replacement for some noodles like spaghetti or angel hair.
Water is necessary for survival. We can live longer without food than water. Clean water is a crucial factor in a sturdy foundation for detox and healing. There are many ways we can control our toxin intake via water by drinking and cooking with only distilled water and utilizing high-quality water filters for everything else. We can even use 1/2 tsp of pure ascorbic acid powder in bath soaks to neutralize any remaining toxins left after the shower filtration.
Unfortunately, most water filters do not remove fluoride entirely. The only way to ensure no fluoride in the water is by using distilled water. A counter steam-water distiller is recommended but purchasing distilled water in plastic jugs is okay, if needed, for a time or during certain times such as travel. This can be tricky as some store-bought distilled water has fluoride added back in after distillation, such as the nursery brand distilled water for babies, so be on the lookout.
I recommend the MegaHome countertop steam water distiller.
Although most supplements require individual recommendations, there are some that everyone can benefit from and can begin right away. These are the most common mineral deficiencies that do not require detailed instruction for beginners.
Vitamin C as pure Ascorbic Acid or AA. Humans have been unable to produce their own AA for some time now and with whole foods not able to supply the required amounts, everyone must supplement. AA can be supplemented in powder or capsule form. AA should be taken daily, in doses of 1 gram up to bowel tolerance of the individual. I recommend any Vitamin C form from Revitalize Wellness. You can use the code HEALINGHAPPENS to receive a discount.
Magnesium- Magnesium Glycinate is the recommended form for anyone just getting started. Without the use of other minerals to balance, Magnesium can be started at 5x your body weight in mg. If you weigh 150 pounds (x5), your daily dose would be 750 mg. Magnesium glycinate can be taken in powder or capsule form. I recommend the Pure Encapsulations brand for capsules, which you can access at a 25% discount using the Fullscript Dispensary link at the bottom of the home page on the website. Revitalize Wellness offers a flavored magnesium glycinate powder as well. You can use code: HEALINGHAPPENS to receive a discount.
Potassium Chloride is another mineral that anyone can begin at any time as it is the #1 depleted mineral from our soil and food. You want to use pure potassium chloride powder with no fillers. Potassium chloride should never be capsulized over 99 mg and more than one 99 mg capsule (should you choose capsule intake) should never be taken at one time. Powder is advised, as 1/8 tsp is 365 mg of potassium chloride. This can be added to a 24-32oz water until your pallet acclimates to the taste, then 1/4 tsp can be added to each water, increasing over time.
Ensuring the air that we breathe is toxin free is important, as one would assume. Unfortunately, we cannot control our outside environment as much as we can our inside. Incorporating and properly utilizing effective air purifying machines, ozone machines, essential oil diffusers and air fresheners are best practice.
An additional method to cleanse the air in our home is to open windows during rain and thunderstorms as they naturally produce ozone that will cleanse toxins and deactivate mold spores that are invisible.
